Great food and cocktails. Haven't been to the west side in years and this is a welcome change. I ordered the poutine at the bar - I've had a lot of poutine before (French fries and cheese and gravy) but this is by far the best poutine in the city. Probably the best south of Canada. Our bartender was fantastic - I didn't catch his name but other people were calling him Dee. He made us a cocktail called the Riverside - basically just a sazerac but with barrel aged gin. It was fantastic. Would definitely return here.

First off, hats off to Black Heron for taking a chance and bringing something fresh and different to the West Side. Hopefully with a little time and guidance on menu options, portion size, and price points, this will evolve into what the West Side needs. That said, my experience with the food left me wanting more and my wallet was considerably lighter. My husband and I stopped in for a weekend brunch and while we knew this wasn't Denny's or Perkins, we did expect larger portions than what our shrimp and grits were. Six small dollops of cheesy grits and 6 small grilled shrimps dotted the plate for brunch. Was it beautifully arranged? yes. Was it the portion size of a fancy appetizer? Yes. Did it have the price tag of a Chicago restaurant? YES. Was I still hungry at the end of it- YES. I. WAS! Was our two drinks and two small meals over $40? - Help me not throw my plate of empty food, dear baby Jesus - It was over $40 for next to nothing portion size (my husband got the same thing as I did), a shot and a pop (my drink), and a smallish sized cocktail (my husbands)*** Can you tell I'm hangy?! When we came in, we were told that they do not have a lunch menu, only a limited brunch menu on the weekends. The brunch menu we were handed didn't have any prices on it and very little information on the portion size. Had I known what the price of this option I would've passed (I see now that their online menu has prices listed. Consult that before stopping in just in case their menus don't list prices). As for atmosphere- they are on point there. The decor will hopefully challenge other neighborhood restaurants to step up their game. A very chill, cool, upscale feel with floor to ceiling windows and modern yet casual seating. The bar is gorgeous- something out of a magazine- very well coordinated. I trust in time they iron out the new business kinks and I am totally willing to try them out again in a few months to see an improvement. In the meantime, I will probably stick to my favorite spots in Eastown or on Wealthy St. for brunch. *** My husband never writes Yelps, but he'd like me to mention that his specialty cocktail was small but still good. He says it was worth the price (and the price was listed on the drink menu) He thinks it was appropriate to sell it at said price, despite what I think. ***

Sorry I didn't get any pictures but I left my phone out in the car by mistake. I visited here during restaurant week and so the menu was rather limited since I didn't partake of the restaurant week offering. I ordered their Westside portine which didn't have much pork belly. I must admit the pork belly was fried nicely so there was not a lot fat on it. I enjoyed the ambiance of the place and the crowd that was in attendance. It's a new restaurant on the modern side but very cozy feeling to it I'll be sure to give them another try and try something else on the menu

2nd visit in 3 days. Even better than the 1st time. The burger was by far the best I've had in recent memory. The La Grand Vitesse drink was superb (tequila, raspberry shrub, simple syrup, and prosecco). And for dessert was homemade strawberry ice cream with roasted orange zest and pecan and honey butter. O. M. G. Posting pictures this time, which I should've die the first time. So these well also include the amazing Westside Poutine I had on my first visit.

This is a local, neighborhood place for me and its opening was much anticipated. I always get very excited about restaurants that are within easy walking distance. This also might make me hyper-critical. The Black Heron is a bit of a mixed bag for me--there were a few things I absolutely loved, but a few things I didn't love. We tried the pierogis, west side poutine, s'more dessert. We also each ordered a beer (Oberon and Summertime). First, I love the bar. It looks great. It makes me want to sit there, order cocktails, and chat up the bartenders all night. I also like the selection of craft beers on tap (a well-deserved point of pride for The Black Heron). I also enjoyed the food--it tasted great and was well prepared. But there was something missing. I feel like The Black Heron has a bit of an identity crisis. Much of this could be chalked up to "new place, still finding itself." The price point for the entrees is on the higher side, which isn't necessarily a problem for me. Although, that will move the place into a different "class" for comparison. The atmosphere and service were not what I'd expect for a place with $30 entrees. (This is not to say it wasn't good--just not at the level of other places in town at that price point). All of that said, I'm happy to come back for more drinks and appetizers. And looking forward to watching The Black Heron grow into itself.

My boyfriend and I went to the Black Heron tonight for a soft opening. We had the Westside Poutine, the burger and the pork chop. The poutine was ok. the fries were stale and the gravy was very salty. I know that poutine is a pretty salty dish anyway, but this was overly salty. The burger was excellent, it was cooked to medium and it is made out of ground sirloin. Our server didn't ask how we wanted it cooked but it was prepared well and not overdone. The pork chop was interesting. It comes with three dots of frozen duck confit on top. They melt as you eat the pork chop...I thought it was a bit much, the pork chop eventually gets soaked in a pool of duck fat. Kind of over the top for an already rich cut of meat. It came with a cake of smoked grits, which was actually my favorite part of the whole meal! The ambiance is similar to that of Donkey Taqueria, light and bright and metal details. It is very noisy as there is nothing to absorb sound. Service was actually not as slow as I had predicted since they are probably still working things out. Our server had to go back and ask a few things a couple of times but that's to be expected at a soft opening. Overall I would say I will definitely try it again, but would get other menu items next time. I would also like to try their brunch!

Excellent new addition to the WestSide. Likely to become the "WestSide's GreenWell. Great design that is equal parts classy and comfortable. Limited craft cocktail menu, but it's a blend of heritage drinks with a modern twist. Impressive draft list that features a great balance between MI craft favorites and some upstarts still elbowing into the industry. Well done. Food wise, appetizer perogies were awesome, as was the pork chop. Highlight was their preparation of grits that came with the pork - presented as a hokey puck of pan seared creaminess. Vege bride had the cauliflower steak and was happy with it. Expanded vegetarian options are the only critique we'd like to see. Good luck to this new joint - we'll be back again and again for sure.

Our group was very excited to try the new restaurant on the West Side. Didn't pan out as expected. Service was fine, but ambiance was lacking. Way too loud for friendly conversation. Everything was lukewarm. Acorn squash soup, kielbasa, and eggplant were good (but tepid). Poutine potatoes were raw, chicken and waffles were uninspired, and tacos were mushy. Roasted vegetable salad was inedible. Sorry Black Heron. We hoped for so much more.

So where do I start? Let's start from the beginning. My coworker/friends and I are in town from Atl dor business and were looking for a fun place to have a little drinks. So we walked from our hotel JW Marriot to a street with bars. Well once we got on that street we realized there was a lot going on (construction). We saw ppl in the window and thought this place looks cools so we went to have a drink. Little did we know, we would experience great service, friendly ppl and great food and drinks!!! We entered the restaurant and immediately the owner (Seth) greeted us and made us feel welcomed. We ordered and drinks and the bartender (Watson) was great. He made our drinks and they were delish . He also let us sample some of the beer on tap, by the way there are lots!!! I ordered the stuffed chicken and waffles. Being from GA you can get chicken and waffles almost anywhere but not some stuffed with truffle Mac n cheese. The chef (Trimell, whobwas easy on the eyes) Came out to ask me if I wanted sweet or spicy sauce with my meal. I asked for both. The food was delish!!! We had a conversation with Seth, Watson and Trimell and it was great. They were kind, fun and personable. I really enjoyed their service and hospitality. They even gave us advice on which Bars to attend in the city for dancing. I recommend this place to anyone visiting or living in Grand Rapids. Great big city decor/feel with a small town atmosphere. A definite MUST try. Thank to The Black Heron for making our Grand Rapids experience great.

I stopped in today with a foodie friend of mine and we had the Ceviche and the Cheese Board. The selections were amazing. On top of the food, our bartender Tony was incredible. This guy had an amazing knowledge of the beers and liquors behind the bar. If you like local spirits, The Black Heron is for you.

It's a fairy modern place in the area, helping revamp the economy. But I should not have to pay 7$ for a soft parade.....a half bottle of soft parade.... Ambience is cool, Very forward in their design and Chicago like but. I still can't get over these drink prices, 11$ for a cocktail...? Very irregular drink prices compared to the local competition.

I have enjoyed both my visits to Black Heron, both during weekend brunch. I was a little disappointed with the menu options as there were no egg dishes. There was a sweet option, a hamburger, shrimp and grits, and a poutine. I don't eat sweets so I went day 1 with shrimp and grits and a Bloody Mary. Ultra savory cheesy grits served w grilled shrimp and a smattering of arugula. I wanted more arugula at the end just to cut through the fat and salt of the dish. But it was yummy. The Bloody Mary mix was made in house and I thought it was too thick and salty. The ice cubes were also made of Bloody Mary mix, so there was no watering it down. For day 2 I went with the burger and coffee. Juicy burger cooked medium really shone dressed w pickled onions and aioli. The fries were expertly seasoned and the perfect texture. Coffee was strong and my waiter kept it hot and full. The location of Black Heron is blowing up with interesting spots. Already a jewel in the crown of Grand Rapids' Westside! I look forward to future visits other than brunch!

Great service!! The chorizo sausage was A wait for it mazing!! Perogies aren't a traditional dough, but if your not a polock like myself, you probably would not know the difference. Staff was kind and comical. I was also given a suggestion by the bartender on beer and he nailed!! Get in here!

I was excited to try this place out with a friend recently and left with mixed feelings. The atmosphere was more rustic than modern than I had thought for starters. We got there around 6:30 on a Thursday and there were only two other groups so it seemed pretty empty. I enjoyed the drink selections including the ciders but there were very few food options. It didn't seem like a place to have dinner rather more of a drink and appetizer kind of place, which is what we ended up doing. I think Black Heron has a lot of potential but maybe they haven't figured everything out yet. On a positive note, the waitress was very friendly and also told us they would have an all new menu for the fall coming in September, so I'll have to give it another try!

Sat at the bar around 2:00. Excellent beer selection, great tender, perfect vibe. Top notch place.

Visiting friends on the west side and this is my first time here and I love it! Jillian (aka Jennifer Anniston) was our server, super sweet and knowledgable of the menu. Plan on visiting here again when I'm in town!
(5)Morgan T.
Portions are a little small for the price. Good drinks, though. Kind of weird atmosphere. You can tell the place hasn't been broken in yet. Service was a little slow, but our server was a chill dude, so I was cool with it. I left feeling not upset, nor stoked.

Had a great experience eating dinner there this evening. Arrived around 7:30pm. It was almost full, about 3 open tables. We were there until 9:30pm and by then the place had almost cleared out. We started with cocktails and the poutine. We received our drinks quickly and poutine in less than 10 minutes. Cocktails are delicious and the poutine was perfect. I ordered a burger and my husband ordered the soup of the day and the chorizo. Both were prepared very well and served quickly. The service was on point, checked on us regularly. We finished with the dessert "bobbing for apples". It was ok, nothing special. Overall service and quality were great, I think their menu is priced $1-$3 more per item than I would expect.

Excellent addition to the west side. First time in today, I had the barrel aged prohibition martini, the rhubarb salad, and the mushroom poutine. All were superb! Very friendly and professional service, great atmosphere, and delicious food and drinks. I'll definitely return soon--it doesn't hurt that I work right down the road. They'll extend into lunch hours soon

Wow. We were there during the soft opening and have a fantastic brunch of shrimp & grits and waffles with chocolate mole. The owners commitment to have 36 drafts of beer and cider from Michigan tops any other bar I've seen. The newly revamped space is a great addition to the Westside. We'll definitely be back.

Ate here a few nights ago. Beer and drinks were reasonable. But the food was not very good. We got the hamburger and the trout. The hamburger was not bad but very salty. The trout was very watered down, seemed like it was frozen before being cooked. The best part of the meal with the corn that came with the trout. I would come again for drinks but not again for the food.

Stopped in with a group for lunch. The portions are small and over priced. The food is good but not great, way below the standards of the atmosphere that The Black Heron is attempting to emulate. The silverware is covered in water spots, table not cleaned very good, my glass had sticky adhesive on the side, the floor obviously not swept, bathroom dirty, etc. Wait staff was great and attentive. Food presentation was good, balance of flavors in my shrimp and chorizo was lacking. The shrimp was great but chorizo missed the mark. Most of the group purchased burgers and shrugged when asked how they tasted. Those of us that didn't get burgers left hungry. We won't return, which is too bad since our office is within walking distance.

I was really looking forward to coming here, especially after reading these great reviews. I really love the idea of the place, especially love that this block is beginning to thrive again, but I'm sorry to say I was not overjoyed. Loved the beer and cider menu - very extensive with many local selections. They were out of the ceviche, which was unexpected and disappointing since it was early in the dinner rush on Friday night. I got the cheese board for our appetizer and that was really delicious - nice selection of fruit, nuts, and cheeses. I'm not a fan of honey so I wished they wouldn't have put that big glob of it on the plate where it could run into the rest of the food. I got the burger, he got the trout and the rhubarb salad. Both were ok, but not close to being the best. or remarkable. Service was great - our server was fun, friendly, and on top of everything. The prices were also disappointing. I don't mind at all paying this much for dinner, but when the food is this average, it makes it especially disappointing.

Had dinner there tonight. Service and drinks were excellent. Shared small plates as we usually do. First was duck pate, superb! Great flavors. Next up was the pierogi with potato, cheese, chives (couldn't find ), and smoked tomato sauce. Sauce was the best part of the dish. Finally the kielbasa, house made. Presented on smoked sour cream with horseradish (didn't detect), green beans and another bean we couldn't identify. This dish definitely needs to have the flavors punched up. Despite the service and drinks not sure that we'll return. The chef has a long way to go to compete with the likes of Green Well, etc.

I was in Grand Rapids for a business trip and wandered into The Black Heron about 6 p.m. I was greeted cheerily and seated promptly. My waitress was very accommodating and attentive, but not rushed. I ordered the rhubarb salad and lake trout as an entree. The salad was creatively assembled with blackberries and watermelon cubes scattered throughout the spinach. The lake trout was baked just right completed with corn puree, bits of pork belly, and watercress. The trout was topped with poached egg yolk - o.k., but maybe overkill. As I ate, more and more diners showed up, from 30-somethings to retirees. The overall environment was lively yet pleasant. All in all, I enjoyed my dinner very much.

Great food and amazing cocktails. The staff here was fantastic. We tried several appetizers, entrees, desserts and cocktails and we loved it all. The staff room great care of us and the chef came out to get our opinion of the food. Try this place.
